Your images are compressed in your browser and are never uploaded or stored.
How to compress an image
- Click the box above, or drag and drop your images onto it. You can add many at once.
- Choose how to compress: pick a quality, or enter the file size you want to stay under.
- Optionally choose a format, and shrink very large images to a smaller size.
- Click Compress images, then download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
Two ways to compress
- Choose the quality: you pick a quality from 20 to 100 percent. Lower numbers give smaller files and a little less detail. For photos, 70 to 80 percent usually looks almost the same as the original at a fraction of the size.
- Aim for a file size: enter a limit such as 200 KB. The tool finds the highest quality that fits under it, and if needed it also makes the picture a bit smaller. This is useful for upload forms with a size limit.
Which format saves the most?
- JPG: a good all-round choice for photos, accepted everywhere.
- WebP: usually gives smaller files than JPG at the same look, and it keeps transparency, but a few older programs cannot open it.
- PNG: lossless, so the quality setting does not apply and savings are small. It suits logos, screenshots and graphics. To make a PNG much smaller, save it as WebP or JPG instead.
Is it safe and private?
Yes. Your images are compressed entirely in your web browser on your own device, so they are never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere. The page loads one small open-source library for the ZIP download, so it needs an internet connection the first time.
Good to know
- JPG and WebP compression is lossy, so some detail is lost. Keep your original files.
- If the compressed file would not be smaller than the original when you keep the same format, the original is kept and the card says so. Nothing is made bigger by accident.
- Saving the image again removes hidden camera details such as the location where a photo was taken, which is also good for privacy. Sideways phone photos are turned the right way up.
- JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas turn white when saving as JPG.
- Animated GIFs are compressed using only their first frame, and HEIC photos from some iPhones are not supported by most browsers.
- You can compress up to 50 images and 100 MB in total at a time. Your original files are never changed.
