PDF to Word

How this converter works It extracts the text from your PDF and puts it into an editable Word document, keeping paragraphs and detecting headings. It does not keep the original layout, images, tables or columns, and it cannot read scanned PDFs, because those contain pictures of text rather than real text.

How to convert a PDF to Word

  1. Click the box above, or drag and drop your PDF onto it.
  2. Choose whether to detect headings and keep each PDF page on its own page in Word.
  3. Click Convert to Word.
  4. Download the Word file, or just the plain text, and check the result.

What this converter does and does not do

This tool reads the text stored inside your PDF and writes it into a new Word document. It joins lines into paragraphs, removes line-end hyphens, and turns noticeably larger text into headings. It works well for text-based documents such as articles, reports, letters and contracts, when you mainly want the words in an editable form.

  • Layout is not kept: fonts, colors, columns, tables, headers, footers and exact spacing are simplified. Documents with several columns may come out with lines mixed together.
  • Images are not included: pictures, charts and logos are left out.
  • Scanned PDFs do not work: if a PDF is made of page pictures, there is no text to extract, and the tool will tell you. Reading those needs OCR, which this tool does not do.
  • Some fonts extract badly: a few PDFs store text in a way that produces odd characters. Check the preview before downloading.

Is it safe and private?

Yes. Your PDF is processed entirely in your web browser on your own device, so it is never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere. The page loads two small open-source libraries when it opens, so it needs an internet connection the first time.

Good to know

  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be converted. Remove the password first.
  • You can convert files up to 100 MB and 500 pages.
  • Always read through the Word file after converting, especially numbers and names.

Only need some pages? Cut them out first with our Split PDF tool. To turn pages into pictures instead, try PDF to JPG.
