How to use the meta tag generator

Fill in your page title and description, then add optional details such as the canonical URL, author and social sharing image. The meta tags are generated as you type, and the search result preview shows roughly how your page may look on Google. When you are happy, click Copy Code and paste it inside the <head> section of your page.

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are small pieces of code in the head of a web page. They are not shown on the page itself, but search engines and social networks read them to understand and display your content.

  • Title tag: the clickable headline in search results. Keep it around 50 to 60 characters.
  • Meta description: the short summary under the title. Around 120 to 160 characters works well. It does not directly change rankings, but a good one can earn more clicks.
  • Canonical URL: tells search engines which address is the main version of a page, which helps avoid duplicate content.
  • Robots tag: controls whether search engines index the page and follow its links. Pages are indexed by default, so you only need this tag to block indexing.
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags: control the title, description and image shown when your page is shared on social media and messaging apps.

Good to know

Search engines sometimes rewrite titles and descriptions, so the preview is a guide rather than a guarantee. The keywords tag is ignored by Google and is optional. If you use WordPress, an SEO plugin can usually set these tags for you from the page editor. For the best social sharing image, use a picture around 1200 by 630 pixels.
