What it checks
- Spelling (red): misspelled words and common typos.
- Grammar (orange): verb forms, subject and verb agreement, missing or extra words and commonly confused words.
- Punctuation (blue): missing commas, repeated spaces and capitalization mistakes.
- Style (teal): wordy or repetitive phrasing that can be made clearer.
Your writing score and readability
The score from 0 to 100 reflects how many issues were found compared with the length of your text. Spelling and grammar mistakes count most, punctuation counts less, and style suggestions count least. The score goes up as you fix issues. For English text you also get a readability score (Flesch Reading Ease), where higher numbers mean easier reading. Scores between 60 and 70 suit most general audiences.
How it works
Your text is checked by LanguageTool, a widely used open-source language engine that applies thousands of grammar, spelling and style rules. This page adds the highlighted view, the writing score, the issue summary and the readability figures. Automatic checkers are a helpful second pair of eyes but are not perfect, so always read each suggestion and decide whether it fits what you want to say.
Limits and privacy
- You can check up to 20,000 characters at a time.
- The free service limits how many checks you can run in a short time. If you see a “too many checks” message, wait a minute and try again.
- To check your text, it is sent over a secure connection to the free LanguageTool service. It is not stored on this website, but please avoid pasting confidential or sensitive text.
