How to use the length converter

Units and exact values

All conversions go through the meter. The imperial and US units are defined exactly in meters, so there is no rounding in the conversion factors themselves.

• 1 inch = 0.0254 meters (25.4 millimeters)
• 1 foot = 0.3048 meters (12 inches)
• 1 yard = 0.9144 meters (3 feet)
• 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters (1,760 yards, or 5,280 feet)
• 1 nautical mile = 1,852 meters
• 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters, 1 centimeter = 0.01 meters, 1 millimeter = 0.001 meters
• 1 micrometer = 0.000001 meters, 1 nanometer = 0.000000001 meters

Common conversions

• 1 meter is about 3.2808 feet, or 39.37 inches.
• 1 kilometer is about 0.6214 miles.
• 1 mile is about 1.6093 kilometers.
• 1 foot is exactly 30.48 centimeters.
• 1 inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters.

Good to know

• Rounding: results are shown to about 10 significant digits. Very large and very small results appear in scientific notation, such as 1.5e-9.
• Numbers: you can type commas, such as 1,250, and negative numbers are allowed.
• Feet and inches: the converter gives decimal feet. For example, 5.5 feet is 5 feet 6 inches.
• Miles: “mile” here means the international statute mile. The nautical mile is listed separately.
