How to add page numbers to a PDF

  1. Click the box above, or drag and drop your PDF onto it.
  2. Choose where the numbers go, how they look, and the font, size and color. The preview shows the result.
  3. Set which page to start on, and the first number, if you do not want to number every page from 1.
  4. Click Add page numbers and download.

Options explained

  • Position: bottom or top, and left, center or right.
  • Format: plain numbers, “Page 1”, “1 / 10”, “Page 1 of 10” or “- 1 -“. The total in “of” formats is the last number used.
  • Skip a cover page: set Start numbering on page to 2. The cover stays blank, and the second page shows the first number. Set First number to 2 if you want that page to read 2.
  • Number only part of the file: set the last page to number to stop before an appendix or back page.

Is it safe and private?

Yes. Your PDF is processed entirely in your web browser on your own device, so it is never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere. The page loads one small open-source PDF library when it opens, so it needs an internet connection the first time.

Good to know

  • The numbers are added as plain text on top of each page. They are part of the page, so keep your original file if you plan to add or remove pages later.
  • Pages that are turned sideways are handled, and their numbers appear the right way up in the position you chose.
  • If a page already has content near the edge, choose a larger distance from the edge or another position so the number does not overlap it.
  • Password-protected PDFs cannot be changed. Remove the password first.
  • You can use files up to 100 MB and 2,000 pages. Your original file is never changed.
