Unlock PDF

For files you are allowed to unlock This tool removes a password from a PDF when you already know the password, or removes printing, copying and editing limits from a PDF you have the right to change. It cannot guess or recover a forgotten password.
PDF

Your PDF is unlocked in your browser. Neither the file nor your password is ever uploaded or stored.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Click the box above, or drag and drop your PDF onto it.
  2. If the PDF needs a password to open, type it in.
  3. Tick the box to confirm you have permission to unlock the file.
  4. Click Unlock PDF, then download your new copy without the password.

What kinds of protection can it remove?

  • An open password: the PDF asks for a password as soon as you open it. Enter that password and the tool saves a copy that opens freely.
  • Restrictions only: the PDF opens without a password but limits printing, copying or editing. The tool saves a copy without those limits.

Both AES-256 and the older RC4 protection are supported. Digital signatures on a document will no longer be valid after the file is changed.

What this tool will not do

  • It cannot guess, crack or recover a forgotten password. If you do not know the password, the file cannot be opened by this tool.
  • It should only be used on files you own or have permission to change.

Is it safe and private?

Yes. Your PDF is unlocked entirely in your web browser on your own device. The file and your password are never uploaded to a server or stored anywhere. After unlocking, the tool tests the new file in your browser and only offers the download if it opens without a password. The page loads two small open-source libraries when it opens, so it needs an internet connection the first time.

Want to add a password instead? Use our Protect PDF tool. You can also shrink the unlocked file with Compress PDF or combine files with Merge PDF.
